Back up and running

About 8 weeks ago, my site along with several others on my host were hacked with malware.  I apologize is anyone had any ill effects.

I rebuilt the site, installed additional security (and my host is installing adding security).  So I hope not to have to go through that again.

I thought I would post a few resources for those of you who are worried about security but may also not feel like you are computer savvy (or don’t want to be a techie). All of these are free and top rated.

Backup

The most important thing you can do it to protect yourself is to keep you system backed up.  Particularly keep your personal data (documents, pictures, video, music) backup up.  And also you system setting.

Two suggestions.

1. Invest in an external hard drive.  (I just bought a second one, 1.5 Terabytes for $80.  Depending on you system you may not need one that large.)

2. Use a cloud service to keep your most current resources continually backup–my favorite is Surgersync.com — you can get 5 gig of space free.

I use it to keep files I’m working on backup online in between back up to my external hard drive.

Antivirus / Malware

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home or small business PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free* download from Microsoft that is simple to install, easy to use, and is automatically updated to protect your PC with the latest technology.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs quietly and efficiently in the background so that you are free to use your Windows-based PC the way you want–without interruptions or long computer wait times.

Before installing Microsoft Security Essentials, we recommend that you uninstall other antivirus software already running on your PC.

Malware Scan

Malwarebytes

Malware (short for malicious software) is any software that is intended to compromise your system either by preventing operation or by exploiting your information or identity.

While there is a paid version of Malwarebytes the free version is great to periodically scan our system for insure you have not inadvertently picked up Malware.

Malwarebytes products have a proven record of protecting computers by completely removing all forms of malware, including viruses, Trojans, spyware, adware and rootkits. When it comes to the safety of your computer, Malwarebytes provides the ultimate in protection from the cutting edge of technology!

Cleaner

CCleaner

There are many tools to optimize and clear your computer, this is of the simplest. And again, there is a paid version but the free is sufficient.

CCleaner is the number-one tool for cleaning your Windows PC. It protects your privacy online and makes your computer faster and more secure. Easy to use and a small, fast download.

Depending on which browser you use and how you use it (bookmarks, favorites, home page etc.) you can set up different setting.

I love to study the Bible and I love to engage with others in learning. I had been privileged to do this on a regular basis through church ministry and through part-time teaching at a local Bible colleges. Helping individuals learn to feed themselves through their own study of God’s Word is joy-giving to me. Influencing groups to do life and church from a biblically grounded, theologically faithful perspective is my passion.

  1. I would love to be an early adopter, I love gadgets and playing with new stuff. But when I wait a year, I usually get a better deal–but it’s tough to wait.

By the way, I’ve already got the next back up system picked!
